What is pseudoephedrine?
Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that aids in the treatment of colds, allergies and hay fever.
Pseudoephedrine is used in the treatment of nasal and sinus congestion, and congestion of the Eustachian tubes (the tubes that drain fluid from the inner ears) caused by the common cold/hay fever and allergies.
Pseudoephedrine is used to relieve nasal or sinus congestion caused by the common cold, sinusitis, and hay fever and other respiratory allergies. It is also used to relieve ear congestion caused by ear inflammation or infection.
Pseudoephedrine may be more likely to cause side effects in infants, especially newborn and premature infants, than in older children and adults.
- Do not give pseudoephedrine to a child younger than four years of age. Always take care when giving cough and cold medicine to a child as misuse can be fatal. Read the dosage instructions carefully and/or seek advice from your doctor.
Seek advice before using pseudoephedrine in combination with any other decongestant.
Avoid when caffeine taking this medication as it may increase the side effects.
Do not use pseudoephedrine if you have taken or are taking an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor), a class of antidepressant.
